Toddlers learn by doing. These activities take five minutes to set up and keep little hands and minds busy.
Nature scavenger hunt
Why: encourages exploration and attention. How: list a few things to find outside, like a leaf, a rock or a flower. Or print one of our free picture-clue scavenger hunts.
Homemade playdough
Why: creativity and fine motor skills. How: make a batch of no-cook playdough and let them squish, roll and cut. Homemade dough is very salty, so supervise and keep it out of mouths (and away from pets).
Obstacle course
Why: motor skills, balance and problem-solving. How: set up a safe course with pillows, boxes and cushions to climb over, crawl under and step around.
Interactive storytelling
Why: language and imagination. How: read a story and let your toddler make choices (“Should the bear go left or right?”) or act out parts.
Kitchen band
Why: rhythm and listening. How: pots, wooden spoons and a container of dried rice make a band. Turn up the music and play along.
Shadow play
Why: imagination and early science. How: in a dim room, use a flashlight to make shadow animals on the wall and guess what they are.
Simple cooking
Why: coordination and healthy eating habits. How: let them wash vegetables, stir batter or tear lettuce. Keep them away from heat and knives.
Finger painting
Why: sensory play and creativity. How: set up washable, non-toxic paints on big sheets of paper. Smocks optional, bath time recommended.
Building with blocks
Why: spatial skills and early math. How: offer blocks of different shapes and sizes and build towers, houses or whatever they imagine.
Simple puzzles
Why: problem-solving and hand-eye coordination. How: chunky wooden puzzles with a few large pieces are perfect. Help find where each piece goes.
Dance party
Why: balance, coordination and burning energy. How: play music, show them some moves, and let them copy you (and you copy them).
Gardening together
Why: responsibility and a love of nature. How: watering plants, digging soil and planting seeds are all toddler-sized jobs.
